Bonfire Night - Guy Fawkes 2020 Party
“Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!”
- Old English Poem c: 1870 Full poem here
The tradition of celebrating “Bonfire Night” or “Guy Fawkes Night” in England dates back to the failed attempt to blow up the parliament by Guy Fawkes in 1605.
Today, his image is immortalized in the “anonymous” mask and he is celebrated as a symbol of anti-government rebellion and populace freedom.
And while to some, the idea of throwing an effigy of a man on a giant fire and celebrating his torture and quartering might seem a tad dark, I learned that if he had succeeded, Guy would’ve in fact committed the “biggest terrorist act in British history.”
But I digress. To Chris, Guy Fawkes Night is just synonymous with his childhood birthday celebrations. And I guess, now with mine (Jen) too!
For it’s true. We did name our restaurant after this tradition because we were both also born on November 5th - just a few years apart.
So, in 2020, we are bringing this tradition to the village of Paisley with our own Bonfire Night Birthday Party!
Instead of a massive fire though, we are holding a Trivia Party!
Don’t worry - Guy Fawkes and British history will not be the theme! Just a fun night to get together and celebrate. Maybe light some fireworks! (We’ll see on that.. there’s rules and stuff!)
